Gary Lee knew he wanted a career in electronics when he was in the ninth grade at Mowat Junior High School in Panama City. He decided that after high school he would join the United States Navy and enter its Advanced Aviation Electronics program(AFTA). The Navy offered the best training, and he knew that financially, college was not an option.
Besides a good career path, he knew he wanted to marry his high school sweetheart, Vicki, which meant he needed to have a good job. The two met on the bus when they were just 14 years old and in their freshman year. Gary used to ride his bike over to Vicki’s house to visit her, and since neither one was old enough to drive, they rode horses together on their dates. They graduated, June 4, 1975, and without an ounce of superstition, got married on Friday the 13th. Less than a week later, Gary left for Navy boot camp.
It was during his time in the service that he delved into all things technical. He entered the advanced aviation electronics program and quickly moved up the ranks, earning Petty Officer AT2 status when he was just 19.
The couple was stationed in Memphis, Tenn., Jacksonville and Milton, Fl. He worked on Navy aircraft, changed out flight boxes, fixed equipment and worked on radios, Doppler radar and other electronics. Pilots started noticing they could more range out of their equipment and Gary became more and more passionate about the world of technology.
After eight years in the Navy, Gary decided to become a civilian and go into business for himself. He set up a storefront in Crestview selling telephone systems and equipment. He started doing business in the hotel industry, earned his pilot’s license and started flying all over the southeast putting in hotel telephone systems. He also provided phone service to schools, churches, medical offices and more. Vicki worked as an electrical estimator and project manager and later as Ops Manager at a major Electrical supplier.
They knew what it was like to scrape by in the beginning then to have plenty along with the changing times of the industry, including the invention of the cell phone and the Internet. This technology caused a major shift in communication, and to reflect that, the company changed its name to Converged Technologies in 2012.
Gary and Vicki work independently out of their home office in Youngstown, Fl. They have two grown children, David Lee and Katie Lee Hill.
Gary enjoys boating and fishing and has become an accidental guitar collector after playing for so many years in the praise band at his church.
Vicki enjoys crafting, crocheting, cross stitch and reading, but they are second to her favorite pastime of all – time with grandsons Cody and Colton.
